Last week I downloaded Wale’s first full album, Attention Deficit, and I think it’s great. Apparently, it’s a “backpacker’s” album (says my hip hop head friend), but I think it’s really catchy. If you don’t know what a backpacker is I suggest looking it up, because I don’t even REALLY understand it all. I enjoy hip hop a lot, but I’m not a hip hop head.

Anyways, back to Wale.

I think the album is great. I downloaded his mixtape a while back and listened to it all summer. There isn’t anything too special, but I find his songs pretty catchy and fun to listen to. One song off Attention Deficit that caught my auditory cortex was Mirrors. It’s got a great beat, a fun hook, and just a strong tone – especially for someone looking for a good running song. It’s a great running song.

So for my post on this frosty Friday morning I would like to introduce you to Wale and his album, Attention Deficit.

National Geographic International Photography Contest

National Geographic has revealed the winners for its 2009 International Photography Contest.

As someone who recently took an interest into photography I think this is pretty cool. My two favourites are the peppermint shrimp and the manatee. Cool lighting, difficult shots, and awesome colours.

Who Do You Follow?

Okay, so before you freak out and think that I’m some sort of stalker – I’m not. Or maybe I am.

With so much potential to be in the know today you have the ability to find and follow creativity, inspiration, and individuals to learn from. Which is why I have a twitter account (typeads) and it’s why I use it to follow some pretty cool people and websites.

One person I follow is thecoolhunter, who is a group of individuals that find cool stuff online, in the street, and around the globe. One post this morning was this really cool Coke Cola spot from Ogilvy, Sydney. It’s very summery and leaves you feeling pretty happy about the brand. Cool spot. Check it out.

Caught this sight from The Cool Hunter – a must follow for all trend geeks – and it is pretty neat. Imagine how cool your street would look if garbage bags had nice pictures on them? A little more pleasant than stinky, I feel.

I wonder how advertisers could use this media. Definitely something to think about for a cool guerrilla campaign. Too bad Toronto started making us use those plastic bins.

Algoma University Photo Evidence

Here we go ad geeks – the evidence of a poorly strategized campaign. They say that when your product has a problem you should ignore it and focus on something positive. Apparently, the fact that it’s so far from Toronto is the unique and positive selling point. And I thought University was about edumacation.

I tried finding the current AOR for the university, but only came up with McDonnell Haynes as their ’08 agency. McDonnell Haynes’ website only shows the 2008 campaign for Collosol U, so I can’t be sure if they created this new one. I’ll keep digging.

My Creative Contribution

So a few weeks ago I gained access to a wonderful Nikon D90 digital SLR and I went a little snap happy with the thing. I have since been working on fixing up a few of the shots and thought I would share a little bit with the webernet.

Tonight’s post is in reference to a controversial and in my opinion weak campaign promoting one of Ontario’s universities – Algoma U.

It all started about a month and a half ago when I was setting up a booth for Brock at the University Fair- my company has Brock as a client – when I noticed the tagline for Algoma University. Now you’d expect something very inspiring and emotional for a university’s tag, but clearly that wasn’t the strategy for Algoma. The tagline promises me a good time while away from home, but neglects to say anything about the education quality. You’ll Love It Here is Algoma’s tagline for their 2009-2010 campaign and in all honesty, I think it’s pathetic.

After expressing my dismay to a number of colleagues I had finally forgotten about the campaign. Until today. On a quick coffee break this morning I was surprised to see a new OOH transit ad right outside my office. The client? Algoma University.

Now it took me about a minute to actually understand the headline, but once I did it didn’t take me long to go on about how poor the campaign really was. Now I’m going to try and post a photo of the ad tomorrow, but for now I’ll just leave you with a description of the concept. Basically, the message behind the ad is that with Algoma U you’ll be able to escape all the parental stresses of being home, ie: parents not letting you wear what you want and curfew.

Wow.

Now, I know that as a student I’d really want to spend $30K on that type of education! Wouldn’t you? That really makes me feel like I’d obtain an honourable education.

Unbelievable, this Algoma U. I’m so curious to find out who actually came up with the campaign.

Hmmm. Well there is more to come from this campaign. Stand by for more.

Classic Ogilvy

One of the most memorable ads of all time came from Mr. David Ogilvy, copywriter extraordinaire.

This classic print ad, that I believe ran in the 60s, boasts one of the strongest automobile related headlines of all time. Ad kids study it, creatives reference it, and classic ad books highlight it.

Re-Airing Old TV Spots

Over the past few months I’ve noticed a little trend where brands are re-airing some classic TV spots and even retracing their steps with old taglines – cough, cough, Swiss Chalet.

Just last week I was reminded of one of my favourite spots when I saw it again on TV. The commercial is for Nestle’s Coffee Crisp and it involves two older women talking about how they like their coffee. It’s a classic commercial that definitely made a cultural impact in the 80s and 90s. I remember throwing in the line, “I like my coffee crisp”, to gain a laugh or two. Check out the spot below.
